About Barbara

Barbara Griswold is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the author of Navigating the Insurance Maze: The Therapist’s Complete Guide to Working with Insurance – And Whether You Should, now in its 10th edition.
After 33 years of experience in private practice working with more than 20 health plans, she spent 15 years providing individual consultations and hundreds of group trainings to therapists nationwide about insurance, session notes, and the business of private practice.
An expert in documentation and insurance, she has been interviewed by the Washington Post, the New York Times, ProPublica, and NPR’s “Morning Edition,” and her articles have appeared in Psychotherapy Networker and The Therapist magazines.
She previously served as an Orals Examiner for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and on the Board of Directors and Ethics Committee for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
Her mission is to educate therapists on “What Should be In Your Charts: Writing Great Notes,” the subject of one of her 10 online courses, and to help therapists feel as confident about the business side of their practice as they do about their therapy.
Barbara publishes a free e-newsletter called “What Every Therapist Should Know About Insurance” (subscribe here).
