Chances are you feel good about the therapy you provide – but not so great about the business side of your practice. Most of us weren’t trained in accounting, fee setting, insurance, treatment plans, and session notes – yet we need these skills each day.

When you fall behind on your documentation or billing, or don’t feel confident in your notes, it can lead to stress and burnout.

I can help.

I’m on a mission to build your confidence by teaching you all the practical stuff you never learned in grad school about running a successful therapy practice.

Hi, I’m Barbara!

Barbara Griswold, LMFT

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and author of Navigating the Insurance Maze: The Therapist’s Complete Guide to Working with Insurance – And Whether You Should, now in its 10th edition.

After 33 years of experience in private practice working as a network provider for more than 20 health plans, I spent 15 years providing individual consultations and hundreds of group trainings to therapists nationwide about insurance, session notes, or the business of private practice.

In my trainings and in my book, I help you understand how insurance works – and how to avoid common billing mistakes.

I address how to write brief session notes and treatment plans that will meet insurance plan approval – even Medicare.

I’ll teach you how to avoid audits, and how to deal with record requests.

I’ll challenge common myths about billing for couples, and help you identify how you might be unknowingly committing fraud.

Best of all, l’ll show you how to build a full practice by accepting insurance, or what you need to know about insurance even if you never sign an insurance contract.

And I offer packages of practice forms and templates designed to please health plans and licensing boards that you can use in your practice.

Success Stories

“Barbara – I LOVED your progress note course. It was BY FAR the best presentation I have ever seen on clinical documentation, and I have been in this field for 33 years. Like many therapists, I sadly never received such training in grad school!”

– Thomas Fronczak, LCSW-R

“Thank you for your course on documentation. I’ve had most members of my staff take the course, and ALL my new hires will as well. As a supervisor, this has helped me a lot, as I was able to streamline the teaching of proper note taking – and I love not having to teach it all!”

– Dr. Sara Gilman, PsyD, LMFT

“I’ve heard many talks on note taking and this was by far the best. I am actually writing my notes differently now (which didn’t happen after previous courses) and I feel more confident about the notes I’m writing. No one has been able to do that for me before. Thank you!”

– Howard Scott Warshaw, LMFT

“Barbara, I watched your course today and I must say, in my 42 years in private practice, your presentation by far has been the all-time best! Comprehensive, professional and enjoyable! Thank you again!”

“This is a great book. It is well written, well-organized, and clear. It is the GPS therapists need for navigating the insurance maze.”

“Barbara Griswold is responsible for perhaps the greatest paradigm shift of my career as a licensed marriage and family therapist. What has changed is my perspective toward managed care. Her book is a must-have, in my opinion.”
